The DIY energy runs strong in Brandon Richie, vocalist of PUSCH, a Philly band making its No Echo debut today. "At first, I had the name PUSCH in mind and started an instagram and just pushing my friends bands through it," he told me last week about the band's start.
"I run a sign company as my day job so I can print flyers cheap. I started going to people’s shows and handing them out. I also had a bunch of songs written after a while and just thought I should start a band and call it PUSCH. So I got my friends together from other bands in the Philly scene and we have become PUSCH."
Those "friends" joining Brandon are founding band members Adam Beigler (Big Handsome, Vulture Raid), Ryan Daley (Brandon Richie Band), and Alex Leniz (Common Crime). PUSCH dropped an EP called Split Second Violence earlier this year, their best material since forming a few years ago. Muscially speaking, it's got a lot of influences going into the stew.
"I personally never want to be boxed in with this project," said the singer. "Split Second Violence is a lot heavier than our last EP. About two years ago, I was listening to a lot of No Pressure and made our songs a bit more poppy. This go around, I wanted to try to beef it up!
"My favorite bands right this moment are CMI, Mindforce, Vespid, Vulture Raid, Suicide Eyes, and Cheddabreed. But I really get down on some techno and pop music so I try to keep the songs simple and catchy. EZ riffs that feel heavy and make you wana move."
On the lyrical front, Brandon clearly wasn't shy about getting personal on the EP:
"'Split Second Violence' is the last year of my life the musical! It talks about some family struggles with the law, friends that shouldn’t have been so close, moving up in life work and music, and people thinking that they are better than you. With whatever we write, I try to keep it current. This release is real special to us. We weeded out a lot of songs and really tried to dial in a sound."
As we spoke about PUSCH, Brandon was literally in the recording studio working on their next EP. "We produce, write, mix and master with Pete Zen He works out of Los Angeles but is from New Jersey so we have known him for a minute."
