I'd like to introduce you to Stressed, a hardcore quartet based in Adelaide, Australia. “Stressed has been a band since 2023, and we have been a straight edge band since day one,” vocalist Nic explains to Echo. “We’ve had a few lineup changes over the years, but we are so locked in now.” That sense of clarity shows up immediately in the band’s evolving stylistic approach. “Our sound has developed quite a lot since our demo,” she says. “The demo was basically straight-up hardcore, but we’ve been gradually moving a bit more metallic since then.
The latest release, A World From Ashes, finds Stressed, as Nic says, "leaning into that ’90s metallic hardcore and H8000 kind of thing.” It’s a direction the band had been working toward for a while. “We’d been wanting to lean that way for a while, and I think my vocal style lends itself better to this style.” The singer points to influences like All Out War, Arkangel, and Blistered, summing it up simply: “Hardcore music but a bit evil and metallic.”
Released back in February, A World From Ashes marks a clear step forward for the band. “This is definitely our most metallic release so far, and personally, I also think it’s the best we’ve done so far,” Nic says. “We were all pretty new to doing bands and writing music when we first started Stressed, so I think it’s pretty cool to see how our skills and such have developed over time.” The record came together with support from multiple labels across the globe—Life.Lair.Regret.Records (Melbourne), Fortify Records (Adelaide), Retribute Records (Japan), and Bound By Modern Age Records (Germany). “We were super lucky to have such great support and have people around the world willing to back us and put out our music.”
The recording process played a big role in shaping the final result. “We recorded it all with Lewis Noke-Edwards in Melbourne, Australia, and he also mixed and mastered it,” the vocalist says. “Recording and mixing with Lewis was such a good experience and I think he did an amazing job so I definitely would recommend people hit him up.” Visually, the release is just as dialed in, with Thomas Sweetman handling the cover art and Dermott Leanord taking care of the layout and single artwork. “They both absolutely smashed it, unsurprisingly.”
Lyrically, 'A World From Ashes' leans heavily into message-driven territory while also opening up on a more personal level. “The lyrics largely focus on global issues like capitalism, political corruption, oppression (of people, women, animals), and straight edge,” Nic explains. At the same time, there’s a deeper level of honesty running through the record. “Although lyrically the most complex/poetic, I feel like they are also the most honest and vulnerable I have been personally in my lyrics.”
That growth mirrors what’s happening musically: “I think that also matches how we’ve developed instrumentally too, with much more complexity and intricacies than previously.”
Stressed are coming up in a local scene that’s gaining serious momentum. “Our local scene is pretty awesome right now,” Nic says. “Adelaide has got quite a lot of hype over the last couple of years despite being one of the smaller cities in Australia.” The singer points to a wave of new energy driving things forward: “There are a lot of relatively new bands doing great things, a lot of young people becoming active in the scene, and lots of people contributing to the scene.”
Among the bands Nic highlights are Twist of Fate, Desire, Theurgy, Time Ends, Declination, Double Barrel Solution, Chrome Cage, and Bolt Cutter. The Stressed vocalist also gives a nod to Dossy (@dossy618), who has been documenting shows in the city: “He diligently records pretty much every show, and I think we owe a big part of the Adelaide hype to him platforming our scene.”
Zooming out, Nic sees Australian hardcore as a whole in a strong place. “More broadly, I think Australian hardcore is in a really great place right now,” she says. “There’s still lots of new bands coming out from all around the country, heaps of people booking shows, photographing and videoing shows, and of course attending shows.”
For Stressed, A World From Ashes feels like both a milestone and a starting point—a record that captures how far they’ve come while setting the tone for what’s next. And for Nic, the support so far hasn’t gone unnoticed. “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us so far,” she says. “The labels, the bookers, and of course everyone who has listened to our music, bought our music, and pulled up to shows. It really means the world to us.”
