Admittedly, a lot of the newer bands covered on No Echo in recent memory fall into easy-to-categorize punk subgenres. But allow me to introduce you to Dinerboy, a sextet who ride the rhythm of their own drum.
Based out of Costa Mesa, California, Dinerboy self-titled debut EP is a musical potpourri encompassing everything from hardcore to new wave-kissed keys to '90s alt.rock-styled hooks. "It all came together kinda fast," says Dinerboy drummer Jimmy Brown of their formation. "Someone joked about making a hardcore band. Someone else jokingly made some demos. Once we heard those we were like, 'oh, this is real.' What started off as a joke ('let’s start a hardcore band lol') has turned into a gut-punching passion project ('holy shit, we actually love this record').
Jimmy talks a bit about Dinerboy's schizo musical approach: "We're kinda all over the place. It's an amalgamation of all the stuff we grew up on: ya know, post punk, metalcore, traditional hardcore, electronic stuff.
"We'd say the distinct Dinerboy sound is a dynamic blend of aggressive riffs, primal rhythms, and Autobot x Transformers fight scenes (the Michael Bay ones). Our influences are definitely Refused, IDLES, Turnstile, Limp Bizkit, The Chariot."
With the EP out since the beginning of this year, Jimmy and the Dinerboy crew is already gearing up for the next step in their mission. "We're writing a ton in June," the drummer says.
"We've got a ton of songs in the chamber and that'll allow us to be picky with what goes into EP2 or LP1?? But we're stoked to take some time and do that. We've got some shows in DTLA, San Clemente, Costa Mesa in the works for July. Playing Garcia's Tire Shop in San Diego in October for the ultra planners out there. And then hopefully get in the studio in the early fall."
