Still hooked on that good ol’ ’90s hardcore? SoCal’s got your back.
San Diego’s newest addition to its ever-growing roster of hardcore bands is Set Free. Featuring members of local straight-edge band Abstain and Glean, and influenced by bands such as Outspoken, Strain, and Carry On, the band released its first demo – three songs for your listening pleasure.
When asked how the band came to be, Dorian Boucher says, “Set Free is really just a band of best friends who do this for the fun of it. Our relationships with each other over the years have strengthened, and so has our love for hardcore - and this demo is what that looks and sounds like.” The idea of all of them (Brady, Dorian, Handsome Mikey, Josh, and Sid) coming together to start a “straight-up hardcore band” has been in their plans for quite a few years, adds Dorian. Sounds like the whole basis of hardcore to me, as it should be.
He also talks a bit about his favorite song off the recording: “'Faded Grey' is my personal favorite, as I wrote that bass line years ago and it reminded me of Outspoken. I’ve held onto that riff ever since, and now hearing the song, it’s exactly how I imagined it in my head years ago, writing it as a teenager living at my parents’ house. That’s a special feeling - that’s what music should be about and that’s what hardcore should be about, carry that spirit, ya know!”
As for the near future – the band plans to release another 3-song demo soon (which they already recorded with Brad from Firestarter), the “freshest 3 tracks we’ve done yet!” as Dorian puts it.
The band’s demo was released through Physical Therapy Records (Birtles did it again, didn’t he?). If you haven’t checked out PT, I highly recommend you do.
