Failed Territory: Dutch Metallic Hardcore Band Serve Cold Justice on Debut EP

Failed Territory formed in the Netherlands in 2025, but their sound traces back to the metallic hardcore that emerged from Europe in the late ’90s and early 2000s. After making their live debut at Rise or Die Fest, the band has quickly moved from local shows to stages like Jera On Air.

This fall, they’re releasing their debut EP, Justice Served, on Death in the Streets Records. Guitarist Yoni gave me the lowdown on the band and their debut EP.

Failed Territory began when Yoni reached out to drummer Lukas, with whom he'd played in a hardcore band nearly 15 years earlier. “I think we both just missed being in a hardcore band, so a short message saying, ‘I need to mosh in 2025,’ was all it took to get him on board,” Yoni tells me. They recruited vocalist Sem, bassist Jordy, and second guitarist Wess, the youngest member of the group and, according to Yoni, “a new-generation kid, but with an old hardcore soul.”

Musically, Failed Territory partly reacted to the slower, slam-influenced beatdown Yoni was hearing from younger bands.

“We just wanted to show them you can play fast, aggressive songs as well,” he says. “Short, fast metallic riffs with some mosh or an OG-style beatdown riff from time to time.”

The band's touchstones include All Out War’s Truth in the Age of Lies, Arkangel’s Dead Man Walking, Hatebreed’s Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire, and Born from Pain’s Sands of Time. Growing up in the southern Netherlands also put the members within easy reach of hardcore scenes in Belgium and Germany.

“We could see a band on tour three or four times and not have to drive more than two hours. For example, we drove to Eindhoven on a Thursday, Hasselt in Belgium on Friday, and then Aachen in Germany on Saturday. We just drove back home after every show. We are lucky enough that we can enjoy the Dutch scene as well as the Belgian and German scenes.”

“We listen to so much metal and hardcore that of course we get inspired by riffs, a mosh idea, or a chord progression. Listening to Trapped Under Ice or Arkangel and then picking up a guitar, I mean, how can those bands not inspire you to write a song people can mosh to?”

Failed Territory will celebrate Justice Served with a release show this month, followed by dates in Germany and Belgium, including shows with xDestroy Babylonx, Take It in Blood, and Rust. They'll close out the year in Essen opening for Born from Pain before returning to the studio in January to record one or two new songs.

And while Failed Territory are looking ahead, Yoni makes a point of giving some love to the MOC scene: “We have a small local scene, but it is alive. There are old guys like us still running around in the pit and young kids having their first hardcore experience.”
