Insurgent is a band based out of Hauts-de-France, located the northernmost region of France. "All of us have experience playing in local bands such as Kill For Peace, Mindslow, Sick Nerves, Drops, and Confessions of D," bassist Mimil wrote No Echo. "We met through local shows and our shared involvement in the scene — whether as spectators, promoters, or musicians."
In terms of their sound, Mimil said the following: "Insurgent is a melodic hardcore band with emo, metal, and metalcore influences. Naturally, you can hear traces of bands like Comeback Kid, Have Heart, Carpathian, Modern Life Is War, and Nine Eleven. What makes the band unique, though, is that while we share a common musical ground, each of us has explored — and sometimes played — other genres or subgenres of punk, metal, and hardcore.
"As for non-musical influences, philosophy and history — especially the humanist movement — are important to us. For example, we used a painting by Italian Renaissance artist Bartolomeo Manfredi for our EP artwork [2024's Against Sorrow and World's Misfortune]. It references a biblical theme, but we stripped away the religious meaning to focus on the rebellious message we want to convey. Our music is organic, spontaneous, and emotional — and sometimes naïve in its lyrics."
Late last month, Insurgent dropped "Reverse the Curse," a single teasing their forthcoming ominously titled EP, Bring the Sword, Not the Peace:
"Bring the Sword, Not the Peace was produced by Francis Caste (Rise of the Northstar, Kickback), and will be released in two parts starting in November 2025," Mimil said. "We’re currently writing the second part of the EP, which is set for release in 2026."
No Echo asked the bassist for his thoughts on the current state of the French hardcore scene. "Since Covid — and in France in general — the hardcore scene has really taken off. The North is no exception, with highly motivated promoters and an ever-growing number of great bands!
"I’d especially mention Broken Ankles, November, Drops, Significant Damage, Loyal to None, and Junkyard. The most important thing is that we all get along and that the bands make the effort to support each other."
