Band: Tombflower
From: Hamburg/Berlin, Germany
Their formation story:
(Yannik, vocals): "Basically, Oli (guitar) and I had wanted to start a project for a long time. We've known each other for ages and that's about how long we've been in the Hamburg hardcore bubble. We quickly got talking to Hjalmar (drums), who we knew from local shows, and Nils (bass), who hung out in the same circle of friends anyway.
"We all share the same political values and ideals, so it was pretty much a no brainer. At the beginning of this year, we were joined by Jakob (guitar), who had been filling in for Oli and Nils from time to time over the last year. That's actually how we first really got to know each other, but we also quickly became friends, so he just stuck with us."
Their sound in their own words:
"It's a mix of hardcore and old-school death and thrash metal, so we would define it as metallic hardcore punk. The influences are wide spread and something of everything, but if you like Slayer riffs and Bloodbath HM2 sound, rumbling bass, old-school hardcore drums with blast beats and/or screaming vocals you might like it."
Latest release info:
"We wrote Ecocide in the first half of '23 and teamed up with David Deutsch, aka 1408 Productions, in Hanover to spend a couple days recording it in the summer. He also mixed/masterd the whole ep for us as well. Massive shoutout to him, he‘s the fucking GOAT.
"The lyrics of the EP focus primarily on an anti-capitalist perspective, criticism of the exploitative and oppressive system in which we have to exist and the associated hatred of the police and state apparatus. They also describe our thoroughly pessimistic and therefore anger and frustration-driven view on the environmental crisis, which has been known for decades but not taken seriously or even ignored/denied by society as a whole.
"Another but much smaller part focuses on more individual problems, more specifically depression and the desire to die, which can also be seen as a result of the problems mentioned above. This is also underlined by the skit from Schubert's Winterreise 'Der Leiermann' which Hjalmar recorded.
"We are more than happy to be a part of Badbrain Records through our new release. Also a big shoutout to the guys, feel free to check them out!"
Future plans:
"Right now, we still have a couple shows/festivals on our list. Maybe we'll do another little run at the end of the year, but we'll see what happens. All in all, writing new music and hopefully hitting the studio again soon."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Yo, there are so many strong bands from the (North) German area, I try to keep the list short. But to name a few: Dagger Threat, Force of Denial, Face Your Fears, Pluto the Racer, Blossom Decay, Mortal Form, and many fucking more. All our label mates: Harm/Shelter, Torch It, Moral Fever."
