Song of the Day

All, “Carry You,” from Problematic (Epitaph Records, 2000)

Penned by bassist Karl Alvarez, "Carry You" is one of my favorite All moments. The lyrics in the song are of the "we may not be together anymore, but I'm doing fine" variety, but with a sweeter touch to them.

Appearing on All's Problematic album, the protagonist in "Carry You" is addressing his former girlfriend (wife?) 15 years after they split up. All singer Chad Price sings, "I see you now / we've got nothing in common / we've come a long way from Buckhorn and Top Ramen," in one section, but then admits, "I carry you with me / to every unfamiliar skyline that I see / you're there enshrined in memory / where friendship never dies," in another.

So, yeah, the dude in the song isn't still in love with the girl, but she's obviously had a huge impact on him. How much of an impact? Well, Alvarez closes out the lyrics with the following: "I wonder wherever you are today / do you carry me the way I carry you with me?"

It's a question so many of us have wondered about. You know, those times when you ask yourself if that girlfriend/boyfriend from college still thinks about you or not. It's great to see an old school punker like Alvarez writing such a tender and honest lyric.

Known for throwing in bits of humor throughout their discography, All sequenced a song called "She Broke My Dick" immediately after "Carry You." You've gotta love that.
