A year ago, I broke the news on No Echo that Wisdom In Chains had welcomed new vocalist Frankie Puopolo into the band. Best known for his bass work in Death Before Dishonor, Frankie replaced longtime frontman Mad Joe. The refreshed lineup has taken its time, playing a handful of shows, and recording in the studio for a split with Florida band Evergreen Terrace, this year. "We just did a quick weekend in Europe, and we are going back there in like a week for a short run," Richie told me earlier this week. "We are being very selective, because our main focus is to get our new album out. We have been waiting years to get more music out, so we are very excited about this."
In addition to Richie and Frankie, Wisdom In Chains is rounded out by lead guitarist Chris Mavromatis, bassist Evan Ivkovich, and drummer Luke Rota. I asked Richie how their fans have taken to the vocalist change. "Frankie has been killing it, we have not played a ton with him live yet, but definitely a handful of shows.
"As I mentioned, we have just been focused on the new album, so we sort of didn’t mess with the old material for awhile, so when it came time to play live, we were like 'oh shit.' [Laughs] But Frankie killed it, he has a different level of energy. As for him and his writing with the new stuff, he’s amazing! We can’t wait to get this new material out there."
More on the album later, but for now, No Echo is premiering "Mindset," a track from Wisdom In Chains' aforementioned forthcoming split EP with Evergreen Terrace:
"Musically, I wanted to write a catchy, old-school style track," Richie said of "Mindset" during our chat:
"It's the kind of song that is short, has all the key ingredients to a hardcore anthem, in and out, a classic vibe. Lyrically, it’s all Frankie, it’s a positive vibe, self sufficient, confidence, that’s what I hear anyway."
The guitarist offered up some more context on the new song: "We recorded this in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania at Rock Hard Studios with our man Dave, and then we sent all the tracks to Kristen Kohle in Germany to be re-amped, mixed, and mastered. He killed it! 'Mindset,' and the other song we premiered last week ('The Gospel'), will be on our full-length album eventually.
"For now, though, our label Dead Serious is releasing a split 12 inch vinyl with another band from the label, Evergreen Terrace. It's 3 songs from our upcoming albums and a cover song each. It's a sort of a promo to get some music out while the albums are being finished."
