Since announcing their new LP, Conviction, with Indecision Records, Odd Man Out have had quite the busy year. The band have already dominated stages in Tacoma at Just Another Gig, the state of Texas with Big Boy, Extinguish, and Firewalker, as well as a memorial gig for a friend in Seattle.
Conviction’s lead singles — “Seattle Straight Edge” and “Eye 4 An Eye” — are already tearing up streaming charts and catching both eyes and ears with their guest appearances. The former being dubbed the “Straight Edge Avengers” features members of Raw Brigade, Moment of Truth, and No Tolerance, and the latter features Sophie Hendry of Firewalker.
Odd Man Out still have so much more to go this year with appearances at not one, but two Sound and Fury pre-shows, Northwest Hardcore fest in Portland, and reunions for In Stride and Allegiance in Vancouver, B.C. To say the band is on a hot streak would be an absolute understatement.
Today, No Echo is streaming Odd Man Out’s third single from Conviction, titled “Fraud," and as a bonus, I spoke with vocalist Jeff Caffey to learn more about the forthcoming album.
Jeff! We caught up recently to chat about the band’s history, but its present is arguably even more exciting than ever before. How are you feeling about the year so far?
Yo! Thank you for having me again, it’s a great year for Odd Man Out. We’re keeping very busy, a large tour to be announced at the end of the year through Australia and Asia as well as our return to Europe. We will be touring the world again with our new LP well into 2026.
I feel great about traveling all over with some of my favorite people. Mirce left the group from 2017-2021 and I’m very excited for him to hit a lot of the spots with us that I will never forget.
How were your shows in Texas? When was the last time the band was out that way before this?
The shows in Texas were amazing, it was a really fun event, I have a lot of love for Austin, it’s always treated us really well. We also have hit a lot of the cuts out there, McAllen being one of my absolute favorites, so we had a lot of people drive out from quite a ways just to see us which felt awesome.
For me, friendships through the core run deep so it always feels amazing to have that reciprocated. I have a big affinity for outer lying scenes, McAllen, Marfa, El Paso, stuff off the beaten path usually has a lot of very motivated and inspiring people.
How do you feel the response to the two singles has been so far?
I hope good [laughs]. I’m not really sure, I only hear back from my friends which is positive. Would love to hear some shit talk to see what we did wrong and know what people like. I just write what I like. I’m pretty excited about the new record, I think it’s the best music we’ve ever done. It always feels good to have your most recent release feel the best.
What bands are you looking forward to at Sound and Fury this year?
Our brothers across the pond in Dynamite. Big Boy of course. Caustic Wound is one of my favorite bands, I played in a band with Max years ago called Convict, people better not sleep on them. It’ll be cool to see Forced Order back, we had a great time with them years ago. Combust kick ass. Love my brothers in Basement. Kruelty are incredible and real good friends. T
oured for almost a month with Peeling Flesh so they are brothers. God’s Hate helps me hit squat PRs. Our gang in Cosmic Joke are also dropping a record. XweaponX are our friends and they’re straight edge. Firestarter are the young soon to be GOATs as well as Seudo Youth and About Face. Bad Beat might actually be family. I’m probably forgetting a ton but I got love for everyone. Hardcore and friendship are awesome.
Please tell us about the song we are premiering today.
"Fraud" was one of the first songs put together for the new record when I still wanted the whole thing to lean more Integrity. I’d been sitting on aspects of it for a while but it evolved into a totally new monster. I love the track and it has my brother Sam Laycock on it who will remain one of my favorite people of all time. He also sings for The Flex and Fate which are no contest my favorite bands from Leeds.
It’s about hardcore and how your relationship to it can expose what kind of person you are. Hardcore saved my life. Don’t care how corny that sounds. I couldn’t do normal life. I had nothing, I had a terrible home life, I left home at 15 and floated punk house to punk house. I found family in my friends and it kept me alive. Hardcore is something I will hold in my heart forever. If your heart is in it people will be able to see and feel that. If you’re in it to be seen, to make money, to put yourself on a pedestal, you’re a fraud. simple as that.
It’s about my time over the years and how I can spot the people who are in it to take right away. Mirce burnt so many solos on the track we had a hard time choosing [laughs. It was awesome. Also, during the whispers part, I'm speaking some Parseltongue for my HP heads.
Can we expect more surprises from you this year? Are you able to share any upcoming plans the band has?
Definitely, mentioned some touring coming up. An exclusive track for a Northwest Hardcore Compilation on Brain Floss Records just dropped. We have two record release shows being booked in August, one in Seattle and one in LA, that should be a really good time.
We’ll have an extended version of one of our LP songs released as a collaboration with our friends from Japan as well as a split sometime later in the year or early 2026 so be on the lookout. We’ll be keeping busy.
