Los Angeles punk outfit Hot Load aren’t interested in subtlety. From the beginning, the band has operated with a sense of urgency, irreverence, and lived-in authenticity that feels inseparable from the DIY circuit they came up in. Their brand-new debut LP, Fate Unknown, captures that energy in its rawest and most confident form yet.
Formed in 2021 in Boyle Heights, Hot Load came together in the aftermath of COVID, when previous projects were falling apart and something more real was needed to fill the void. The lineup—Steven and Marvin on guitars, Matt on vocals, Lucian on drums, and Franco on bass—was already connected through years of playing in and around Los Angeles’ DIY punk underground. Bringing their collective experience together felt inevitable.
Rock ’n’ roll and punk have always been the foundation. Early on, the band leaned heavily into Motörhead-inspired speed and grit, a sound that defined their first demo, Love Bag Demo (2021). True to Hot Load’s unhinged sense of humor, one cassette included a hidden gram of cocaine for a lucky winner. They followed that up with the Love and War 7” in 2023 via Painted Pony Records, before turning their attention to what would become their most fully realized release to date.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by longtime friend Andrew Oswald at Paradise Recorders in Anaheim, Fate Unknown was tracked in just two days during July 2024, with the band ripping through 11 songs in a single session.
Writing for the record began in early 2023, initially focused on the title track, but was temporarily derailed by a series of shows and a pivotal Japanese tour in June of that year. Returning home energized, Hot Load locked in and completed the LP by late spring 2024.
Lyrically, the record carries added weight. Vocalist Matt wrote much of the material while in rehab, a period he referred to as “Detox Compositions" to No Echo in an email. That context gives Fate Unknown a depth that contrasts sharply with the band’s reckless reputation, grounding its chaos in something more personal and earned.
Musically, Hot Load have expanded beyond their early formula. While the band still thrives on speed and grit, the new LP reflects a more confident, refined approach shaped by international punk and rock ’n’ roll influences. Rather than chasing a single lane, they embrace a broader sonic palette, letting instinct and experience guide the sound.
With the record out, Hot Load aren’t slowing down. An East Coast tour with Pink Mist is set for April 10–18, including a handful of Canadian dates, followed by a UK and European run booked through Stay True Booking in August 2026. For a band that’s never played Europe before, the plan is simple: take whatever shows come their way, play with anyone, and soak it all in.
Between tours, writing has already begun again whenever downtime allows. For now, though, the focus is on getting Fate Unknown into as many hands as possible and taking it on the road.
