Meet Ghaul, a metallic hardcore band based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The group was formed in 2018 by guitarist Skyler and bassist Jordan out of the ashes of other musical projects in the Fraser Valley region.
"Around that same time, I moved to BC from the Emirates with my family and met Skylar at a poetry slam, of all places, and we bonded over 2010s hardcore," Ghaul vocalist Rob told me via email. "Caleb (drums) we met just going to local hardcore gigs and he introduced us into the Vancouver scene."
With a few releases under their belt already, including last year's Down Here Where I Am EP, Ghaul's sound is riffy and catchy but just don't ask Rob to hit you with any FFOs anytime soon. "I’m horrible at relating bands, so our sound I’d describe has heavy hardcore for fans of Counter-Strike: Source, Girlboss grindset, Apple wearable tech, Starbucks, Crocs, Karl Marx, going to rallies, and TEDx talks."
Make up your mind yourself via "At the Vein," a standalone single Ghaul released earlier this year:
"This single is a song we wrote a while ago but never got around to finishing or recording, and we’re stoked we got around to it. Recorded by the Rob Foster (Juice, Enforcers) at his new studio, Good Lookin Out Studio. Lyrically, the song is about working through love, loss, and depression."
Our email exchange concluded with Rob giving me his current music picks from Ghaul's local scene. "Vancouver flies under the radar but we’ve got a popping scene right now. Bands you wanna check out for sure are Juice, Place of Refuge, Second Nature, Don't Sweat It, and Stunlock.
"Shows have been getting more and more new faces and crazy, pit demon moshers so if your band hasn’t come through yet hit up Here and Now or Head Check Promotions and come play."
