Their formation story:
(Jesse, vocals): “A good friend of mine called Chris Bress (The Lowest Form, Army of Flying Robots and co-owner of Reckless Records in Soho, London) shot me a message one day asking if I wanted to come to see some young screamo bands play the skatepark in Folkestone, Kent. So we met up and went down there where I saw a local band playing called Je Souhaite.

"I knew that screamo was getting big again amongst the younger generation but I was truly impressed on how they had nailed that sound. It was discordant, chaotic, messy in the best way and it had that pure intensity that I had fell in love with when I discovered screamo in the early 2000s.

“I’d been looking to do more of an early 90s emo band rather than screamo, so after the Je Souhaite set I introduced myself to the vocalist Shaun who also played guitar and I asked if he would be interested in doing a band together. He wasn’t [laughs]. He was playing in a few  bands at the time and didn’t have the time for it which I understood.

"I spent the next few months flyering around local shows to see if anyone would be interested in starting a band. I didn’t have too much luck with that but the word was getting out. My close friends said that the problem may have been that most people didn’t know the influences I put on the flyer but for me that was part of getting the right people.

“Anyway, a few months go past and I crossed paths with Shaun again at a show at our local venue in Ashford. He informed me that he had put a few of his bands to bed and wanted to know if I was still game for doing what would become render, which I obviously was. He also had a drummer and a bassist lined up who he had worked with before which was Shaun’s brother David and their friend George and that was the lineup complete.”

Their sound in their own words:
“It’s emotional hardcore or emo in the classic sense. The main influences for the project are international bands like Indian Summer, Julia, Policy of 3, Still Life, Plunger, Don Martin Three, Allure, September, Breakwater, The Trigger Quintet and a whole bunch of others. Also we are influenced by our own emo bands on this side of the pond like Bob Tilton, Tribute, Manrae and Fabric (shout out Tony Sylvester).”

Latest release info:
“After we sorted the line-up, Shaun would start sending me riffs which we would then work through and structure. We got in a practice space afterwards with George and David and finished structuring the whole songs. Lyrically, the songs are about loss, love and everything in between. Putting away past feelings of losing a loved one and then celebrating love and the future. My favourite track is “Daffodils in Spring” which is a near 10-minute love song dedicated to my wife.

“We recorded with my old friend Jason Frye at Century Audio in Minster, Kent and then I wanted to hand the recordings over to Will Killingsworth at Dead Air studios in Massachusetts, USA for mixing and mastering. Orchid has always been one of my favourite screamo bands so there was no question that I wanted Will to have an input on the demo.

“When writing the demo, myself and the guys were getting to know each other and working out different sounds whereas with the two new songs we have nearly ready, the sound is more solidified and the momentum is picking up for sure.”

Future plans:
“We have those two new tracks recorded and nearly mixed then Will is going to master them. Plus, we are working on a few more in the practice space. We’ll be playing some shows sporadically with whatever works around our work schedules. We have a show in London on  October 4th with The April Situation and Wimp.

“Now things are moving forward and coming together nicely regarding the sound, I am keen to record as much as possible and get it put out on physical media. My favourite part of the genre as a collector myself is 7” records, tapes, cardboard brown covers and stamps/DIY art.”

What other bands from their region should we check out?
“South East Hardcore is probably the strongest it’s been in a while. I’m originally from London but I moved to Kent about six  years ago. I know the area from going to hardcore shows here over 20 years ago and I reconnected with my old friend Dan Duggan who is from here. We  started putting shows on under the name Vae Victus Hardcore Collective after our other friends were kicking things off again with their shows in Maidstone under Blood Soaked Style.

“Shout out Mindless, Freeze, Sarah Tonin, Warden, Acid State, Mug Shot, Grim Harvest, Premeditated Murder, Swear Down, Je Souhaite, Bells & XREBELX.

“And also I gotta mention the Brighton mob who are pretty local in the grand scheme of things. They’ve been killing it for a while and it’s definitely my favourite hardcore scene about at the moment. Shout out Burning Water and BN1 Collective. No Relief, Prom, Wimp, Chasm, Blood Gutter, Mortal Spirit, Outlive, Wiseguy, Aku and a whole bunch of others.”
