New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Cold Hard Steel

Band: Cold Hard Steel
From: Alabama, North Carolina & Mississippi

Their formation story:
(Patrick, guitar): "It started with a DM on Instagram to me from JT who I had know since 2010. Our old bands did our first full US tour together. He messaged me wanting to see about working on some songs together for fun. I demo a lot of stuff from home so I came up with an idea pretty quickly. I honestly didn’t think much of it until I heard it back with his vocals on it and knew we had something good.

"So we wrote a demo and came up with a name for that band and ran with it from there. I’m in North Carolina so I just come up with a lot of the ideas and demo stuff. Everyone else is from Alabama and Mississippi. I only get to play some shows here and there unfortunately, but everyone in the band holds it down and we find people to fill in where needed just like most other bands."

Their sound in their own words:
(JT, vocals): "I would describe the band as a hardcore band. It’s definitely metallic but not metalcore. Our main influences are Cro-Mags, Merauder, Cold as Life, Hatebreed, E.Town Concrete, and Trapped Under Ice. We draw inspiration from hip-hop and and rap as well. But we just wanted to do a very moshable style of hardcore.

"I try to picture what the crowd would be doing when I write songs. And like anyone else I write what I would want to hear. I don’t think what we’re doing is anything groundbreaking. But it’s honest and we want to contribute what we can to hardcore as whole in our own way."

Latest release info:
"Our new double-single is called Born II Suffer. It’s actually something I wrote in 2020/2021 when I was writing on my own for sanity during the pandemic. The message behind it is that we’re all literally born to suffer in our own way. What you decide to do with that pain is what makes you who you are.

"The song 'Soul' is about hardcore and how we’ve been a part of it while seeing many people come and go. I’ve been going to shows since 2003 so it’s interesting when some people come along and don’t like hardcore or think it should be something different. It’s for anyone, but it’s not for everyone."

Future plans:
"We just finished an East Coast run with Brass Tongue from South Carolina. Today is our first day of a Midwest run with Lethal Method from Nashville. We’re always working on new music but we just released the single last week, but plan on recording another EP later this year / early next year. Also doing a few weekends here and there the remainder of the year."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Lethal Method, Wwisted Luck, Double Tap, Life’s Plan, Shogun, Brass Tongue, Victim of Suffering, Realm of None, Hard R, Forced Neglect, Briteside, 7 Stitches, Commodity, No Cure, Dogpile, My Reply, Die Laughing, High Strung, Path of Destruction, Junkhead, any band representing southeast hardcore!"
