Song of the Day

Bangalore Choir, “Loaded Gun,” from On Target (Giant Records, 1992)

Do you remember when Accept had an American singer for that one album? No? Well, then you should check out this previous post for some background on that commercial debacle.

Either way, that vocalist, David Reece, moved on after his short stint with the German metal masters and started a new band called Bangalore Choir. The quintet also featured two former members of Hericane Alice: bassist Ian Mayo and drummer Jackie Ramos.

Blending the AOR style of acts like Foreigner and Brian Howe-era Bad Company, with gritty hard rock, Bangalore Choir released one album, 1992's On Target.

Produced by Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth), and released by Giant Records, On Target had a dismal run at retail, but it's a solid record, featuring 4 - 5 tracks that deserved more attention from fans of this kind of stuff.

The highlight from the set is "Loaded Gun," the first single from the album. Co-written by Curt Como, Harry Paress and Ricky Phillips—the latter a bassist who's played in The Babys, Bad English and Styx—"Loaded Gun" is the perfect vehicle for Reece to show off his raspy yet tuneful vocal delivery. Everything about his performance, and the rest of the track, seem like they were tailormade for rock radio.

Sure, the chorus refrain of "Your love is like a loaded gun" is as cliché as you can get, but if the song came out a few years earlier when groups like Whitesnake were still ruling the airwaves, MTV would have been all over it like Doc McGhee at a buffet (some of you got that one).
