Sorry Baby is a new band out of Orange County, California with a sound that isn't that easy to pin down with a single genre tag, just ask vocalist Jordan Salazar.
"It's hard to say when you're in it, but I just know when I started the band, I wanted to sound like the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Eagulls, and Fontaines DC," he tells No Echo. "But I think we ended up naturally sounding like a Revolution Summer Washington, DC Dischord band, which makes sense. So maybe like a post-punk hardcore thing? It's hard to say. People have said we sound like Embrace or Fugazi."
The singer closes his answer out with the following: "I think if you like any of the bands mentioned, and like Militarie Gun, Hot Snakes and Black Flag, you'll dig what we're doing."
Jordan is joined in Sorry Baby by drummer Colin Strahm, guitarist Chad Yanagisawa, and bassist Chip Lehman. "My last band was on the same label as one of her last bands," Jordan says. "She likes really cool music and just came off as someone who felt like a friend even though the first time we met in person was at our band's first practice. Being able to hand-pick band members is something that usually doesn't come off that easy but I was able to do it, and we really lucked out. We all just get a long so well and are all on the same page about this thing. I'm super grateful for all 3 of them."
Sorry Baby recently released their 4-song debut EP, Coward, which was tracked by Taylor Young (Twitching Tongues, God's Hate) at The Pit Recording Studio and Paul Miner (Death by Stereo) at Buzzbomb Sound Labs:
"We just wanna play more shows with cool bands. That was kind of the reason we started the band," Jordan says about Sorry Baby's future plans. "We just wanted to create music and play it loud with people we enjoy being around, and then eventually play shows. So we're right on track. We're kind of playing with the idea of adding a second guitarist for the next EP. And that's it for now, really. Play shows, release music we're proud of, and be grateful if people care about the band at all."
With bands like No For An Answer, Uniform Choice, and Ignite coming out of there, Orange County has a deep-rooted connection to hardcore, so No Echo asks Jordan for his thoughts on the scene there right now.
"We're proud to be from here, but there's not that many new bands that I'm aware of to check out. For sure Sweat and Skullcrack are great ones, although they've been around. Duhkha are brand new and they're definitely worth checking out. LA and Long Beach has Cosmic Joke, Graverust, Lockslip, Corre Diablo, Overexposure, Adulterinee, and Reckoner. San Fernando Valley has Human Garbage who are really great too.
"There's so much good music out there and always new bands that are just so impressive. You're going to like at least one of those bands I mentioned for sure."
