One of my all-time favorite music-related books, Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore Music, is getting the reissue treatment. Revelation Records Books will be releasing an expanded edition of the out-of-print tome next month, and I've got the details below.
Originally published in 2008 by MTV Press/powerHouse, Radio Silence was the brainchild of designer Nathan Nedorostek and writer / musician Anthony Pappalardo (In My Eyes, Ten Yard Fight). The new 2025 expanded edition of Radio Silence has been "restored from the original source files and features rare and never-before-seen material from the genre’s most pivotal moments and figures."
The updated edition includes unpublished images and ephemera from Youth of Today, SS Decontrol, Die Kreuzen, Minor Threat, and many more pivotal hardcore bands.
To celebrate the reissue of Radio Silence, a couple of events in NYC and Philadelphia have been booked featuring talks about design in the hardcore space that should be quite interesting.
“The book’s release parties and events all happened while social media was still primitive," says Pappalardo. "There wasn’t a place to drop long-form video yet—pre-Instagram, so basically it didn’t exist. [laughs] With how much hardcore’s grown since 2008, we hope multiple generations will find the same value in the book we saw as we were making it.”
