For more than a decade, Norway’s Korrupt have been channeling the tensions of life on the country’s south coast into abrasive, riff-heavy hardcore. On October 30, the Kristiansand five-piece will return with their third full-length, The Weight We Carry.
Formed in Kristiansand in 2013, Korrupt came out of the city's small hardcore scene. Following 2023’s Secret Sorrows, the nine-track album finds Korrupt further sharpening their collision of hardcore and blackened metal while tackling religion, social control, and the burdens people inherit and carry through life.
Growing up in a region historically shaped by conservative Christian culture has repeatedly informed the band's music, particularly its focus on organized religion, social control, and the scrutiny that can accompany small-town life. Those themes run throughout The Weight We Carry, which deals with the expectations, fears, pressures, and beliefs people absorb and eventually have to decide whether to accept or reject.
Today, No Echo is premiering “Devoted to the Grave,” a track that nearly didn't make the album despite becoming an important part of it for the band.
“‘Devoted to the Grave’ is a song about carrying someone else’s scars until they become your own,” Marius tells No Echo. “From humiliation and self-destruction to the fight for redemption, it is about confronting the past, reclaiming yourself and finally laying the weight to rest.
“The song was finished writing only a couple of months before its release, and barely made the album. To me, it's a super important song for the album.”
The Weight We Carry follows Korrupt's 2017 debut, Preachers and Creatures, and 2023's Secret Sorrows. The latter earned a perfect 6/6 from Norwegian newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad, which declared early that year that the standard for 2023's best record had already “been set.”
