Band: Runnin Hot
From: Long Island, New York
Their formation story:
(Darren Nanos, drums): "I think about 2 years back, [John] Scanlon and I were on a drive back from a show somewhere and were discussing the status of our various bands. After a while, one of us suggested we ought to go collaborate for another one, because we both wanted to do something in this specific style. You finish the rest, Scanlon.
(John Scanlon, bass): "Pretty much what Darren said, another key factor is I told Brendan I’d try to write a demo and that he should sing on it, so that’s really why the idea of the band started. We asked Richie to play guitar a little bit later and then I was at Scene 1™️ show with Joey when he mentioned he wanted to potentially play guitar in a straight-forward hardcore band, so I asked him if wanted to join too. He still hasn’t been to a single practice, and didn’t play the first show, but he’s still in the band… I think.
"Gerry ended up filling in for Joey at the first gig, and will probably have to do it multiple times going forward, so I’m just going to count him as the third guitarist cause why not."
(Brendan Sullivan, vocals): "I thought Runnin Hot was a cool name for a band and Scanlon wrote a demo with Darren."
Their sound in their own words:
(Scanlon): "'80s NYHC + Boston/New Bedford Hardcore (which was just trying to sound like '80s NYHC). I feel like the Boston / New Bedford bands always did NYHC the right way so I just wanted to do something similar. Breakdown, Outburst, Invasion, Rampage, The Rival Mob - all bands with neanderthal (not the band) riffs."
(Darren): "Personally speaking, I just want to write no-frills, regular ass hardcore. Something with the groove of Murphy's Law, and then direct speed and simplicity of drum parts I grew up listening like Ten Yard Fight or Floorpunch. Get to the point in the verses, then mosh."
(Brendan): "I wanted to just rip off Brotherhood completely. I try to sing like him and John Brannon. We all love Mental and shit like that too."
Latest release info:
(Brendan): "We wrote a dope ass demo about how much I hate going to work and taking pills."
(Darren): "Yeah, it was over the course of a year, just me and Scanlon at first, demoing out songs in my space. We got maybe eight songs and then when Richie finally started attending practice, he brought two more tracks in one day. We only finished eight of them cause we got lazy."
(Scanlon): "Morgado drew the cover, Scheme put it out (I guess), and Brendan killed it."
Future plans:
(Scanlon): "I’d like to do a proper 7”, whether that’s on Scheme or Rebirth, and just get Long Island kids into more straight-forward-sounding bands. Maybe do a few shows outside of New York if we’re asked just to experience Brendan on road trips."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Darren): "Fröthing Mad, Square One, No Values, and Ferment. Of course Bazooka too."
(Scanlon): "Top Dollar, Kasso, Jacked Chicks, Top of The World, and there’s a ton of other newer Long Island bands that are too many to name."
(Brendan): "Combat 84."
(Darren): "They aren't from our region, dumbass."
The Runnin Hot demo is available on cassette via Scheme Records.
