Band: Cell Deth
From: Prince Edward Island, Canada
Their formation story:
(Guitarist Matt): "We formed in early 2022 in the wake of Brett and Ryan’s previous band, Antibodies, who's other members moved off-Island. Ryan’s other project Tin-Ear, and Brett's other band, Warsh, had also had members move around the same time so the two of them were itching for a new project.
"I hadn’t played guitar in a band since Acousma split about 7 years prior and Story and I had put our bass and drum project called Uncle on the back burner since we moved out to the woods and had a couple of kids. So when Ryan approached me to see if I wanted to start something with the two of them,
"I was eager to play again and had already been sitting on the idea for Cell Deth for a couple of years; with the band name, a pile of riffs, and some artwork already sorted out. We ended up gelling well together and decided to run with the concept, writing enough songs for a demo by the spring. Originally, we were going to remain a three piece and cover the vocals ourselves, but none of us could hold up doing vocals while playing this fast, so we looked for a standalone vocalist for several months.
"We recorded our demo in May 2022 and then sat on the tracks while we tried to find a singer and kept writing new songs the whole time. Eventually, Story offered to take on the task, an idea I think we had all hovered over the entire time since they really get the style we were going for. We have young kids together so I think we were originally apprehensive that it would be hard to coordinate if we were both in a band, but it turned out to be way easier to juggle against our home life together, and their vocals fit into what we had written perfectly.
"Story was able to write lyrics at the same pace that we wrote music and laid down the vocals on our demo after two practices. We played our first show a month later, almost a year after we had originally formed. It was nice to come out the gate swinging after spending a whole year writing and tightening our set, and I hope that hard work came through in our first few live gigs."
Their sound in their own words:
(Vocalist Story): "I would say vocally, my biggest influences are probably Acid Reflux and Limp Wrist. Our songs are generally pretty political, whether it's from a personal perspective or a world view. There's lots of shit to be mad about out there, and I try really hard to share my own personal experiences very openly - whether
it's telling folks what our songs are about or being sure to include a lyric sheet."
(Bassist Ryan): "We stole a riff from Glenn Branca and then played it poorly."
(Guitarist Matt): "I’ve been drawing influence mostly from a mix of classic hardcore and '90s/early '00s fastcore. Think Poison Idea and Black Flag style riffs with Scholastic Deth and Seein Red type song structures, with a dash of Crossed Out.
"I’m also really inspired by the surge of really good hardcore that’s currently happening worldwide, so when our new stuff comes out you might be able to pick out some subtle nods to hardcore contemporaries like Slant and GEL."
Newest release info:
"The demo was recorded and mixed by our drummer Brett and was released in January as a limited to 100 tape run by Sewercide Records out of Nova Scotia. There aren’t many left so if you're into it, hit them up for a copy before they’re gone. The band still has a few copies left which will be available at any of our
upcoming shows. Special thanks to Dave from Sewercide for the support."
Future plans:
"Our first EP is basically written and will be recorded hopefully in the next couple of months. If you liked the demo, look forward to something more focused and hard-hitting. We’re really proud of the new songs we’ve been working on and can’t wait to share it, hopefully on vinyl this time.
"We’ll be really busy playing shows this spring too. We’re signed on the play the inaugural Yell Out Fest in Montreal on March 18, then in April (14-16) we’ll be in Ontario for a weekend of shows in the GTA with our friends Sago and Brain Itch. In May, we plan to do a couple of weekend rips around Atlantic Canada."
