New York City post-hardcore mainstays Quicksand are back with their first new album in five years. Titled Bring On the Psychics, the record is set for release on July 17 via Equal Vision Records, marking the band’s debut on the label and the next chapter in their long-running evolution.
Produced and mixed by Jon Markson (Drug Church, Drain), the album was tracked over a tight 10-day window and finds the trio—Walter Schreifels (guitar/vocals), Sergio Vega (bass/vocals), and Alan Cage (drums)—bridging their foundational ’90s sound with the more exploratory direction they’ve pursued in recent years.
Alongside the announcement, Quicksand have released two new songs, “Get to It” and “Regenerate,” both of which lean into a more direct, high-energy approach. Schreifels describes the intent behind the tracks as rooted in movement and forward momentum. “‘Get To It’ is about poking holes in the excuses for standing still,” he explains. “‘Regenerate’ is about finding new paths forward… life will keep taking things away from you, but that’s how we learn and grow.”
The music video for "Get to It" was directed by Jesse Korman:
Formed in 1990 out of the lineage of bands like Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Burn, and Bold, Quicksand helped define what would later be labeled post-hardcore—melding hardcore aggression with groove and texture. Their early releases, Slip (1993) and Manic Compression (1995), remain touchstones, and their post-2012 reunion output has continued to push their sound outward.
Bring On the Psychics appears to continue that trajectory. Inspired in part by a quote from Carl Sagan, the album sees Schreifels revisiting early hardcore ideals through a modern lens. “I was going back to a lot of my earlier influences… records that spoke to their time and offered a path forward,” he says.
Musically, the record spans a wide range—from the driving opener “Get to It” to more atmospheric moments like “Crystallize,” as well as unexpected turns such as the laid-back “Days You Run To,” which nods toward influences like Fugazi and even Pink Floyd.
Quicksand will support the release with a run of international dates this summer, including festival appearances and club shows across Europe, with more to be announced.
