The whole "let's get the old band back together" saying is an apt one when discussing Slip, a new hardcore outfit based out of Malmö, Sweden.
"So, the long story is that three of us were in a band called Balance back in the late '00s," says Ulf, Slip's guitarist. "We were almost done with recording an LP in 2009 when the band fell apart. We all went our separate ways, played in some other bands, moved to new cities, started families and jobs.
"Over the years, I revisited the recording and it bothered me that nothing came of it. Fast forward to 2021 and Kalle, Max, and I found ourselves living in Malmö again and Slip got a slow start. We got Mona involved sometime last year, and our lineup was complete. We revisited some of those unfinished songs, improved on them where we thought we could, and wrote some new songs as well."
While Sweden's hardcore music history is deep and rich, Ulf and Slip mined influence from a different part of the world. "We play hardcore that is influenced by late '80s/early '90s NYHC with some groove. I want us to have hooks just as much as I want us to have hard riffs. We love bands like Judge, Killing Time, and Breakdown, who all have that."
Slip's 5-song demo was released earlier this summer. "Our demo was recorded in our rehearsal space by our friend Ronnie Källback from the great local band Hard Pass. It was a quick two-day session. As I said before, the majority of the riffs for some of the songs were written 15 years ago, and some were finished the week before recording. But it feels coherent to me, and this is not something we do for nostalgia.
"I’ve been playing in bands for more than 20 years now and I’m still as passionate about hardcore."
Ulf is psyched with the way the underground music community in his country is doing right now. "Swedish hardcore is doing so well right now! Everyone check out Speedway, Existence, Sidestep, Disavow, Big Babe, Modern Guilt, Sharp Tongues, Slöa Knivar, Bulls Shitt, Xiao, Outstand, and Hard Pass.
"Slip members also play in Hårda Tider and Manic Ride."
