A recent EP that caught my attention was The Sound of Self Destruction, the debut EP from San Diego hardcore band, Intercom. Naturally, I reached out to the group to find out their story.

"Mason (drummer) and I had met from playing in punk bands when we were younger but didn’t really get to know each other till around 2021," vocalist Sergio Garduño wrote back. "Naturally, with him being a drummer and me a guitarist, we decided to write a punk demo based on what we were listening to around the time."

How would Sergio describe the Intercom sound? He got you covered: "I'd say hardcore punk, I try to be diverse without straying too far away from the punk aspect. I love me a good stomp part, a good tupa tupa beat and some good riffs. It’s what I look for when I listen to any punk record.

"Some of the bands we were listening to around the time of writing the tracks for the EP were The Rival Mob, Armor, Lockjaw and lots of 86 Mentality."

Check out The Sound of Self Destruction for yourself:

"The songs we had planned for this EP we actually have had for years but not recorded, so 3 were re-recorded and 3 were new ones," wrote Sergio. "We took so long to get it all together but it all made sense once we were getting closer to the release. It was all last minute but I’m glad it’s out and I’m proud of it. Big shoutout to our good friend Evert from Under the Gun Records, for sure made this release something to look forward to with the vinyl release."

If you're in the San Diego area late next month (September), you might want to ask a punk about this ripper Intercom will be part of:

Speaking of San Diego, Sergio spreads some amor for the following bands: "First and foremost, Intermission from San Diego. This band is everything you could ever want from punk. They have a demo out on the tube I highly recommend y’all check it out.

"Our good homies in Chalk from Chicago. Absolute scorching hardcore punk. Grimy, dirty and fast just how it was intended to be. And last but not least, Human Resources from San Diego, if you like mysterious guy hardcore you will love this band. Don’t sleep, it’s real deal punk music."
