New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Stranglehold

Band: Stranglehold
From: Birmingham, UK

Their formation story:
(Jack, guitar): "Al, Ash and I used to play in a band called Suppress, which kinda fizzled out in the end. Al was already working on a project with Ash and our mates George and Jimmy when I said to Al, 'we should do a new band that’s proper hardcore for hardcore.'

"I wrote the first version of 'False Crusade' and sent it to Al, who then sent me back the first version 'Unity' about a day later, I then went over to his house and it just kinda snowballed from there. Al then suggested that we just turn his new project with the boys into what we’ve got now.

Their sound in their own words:
"In terms of sound, it’s hardcore pride hardcore. We really lean into that sound that Bind had going for them (imagine if we got that LP…), but there’s a hell of a lot of Strife and Ecostrike worship in our sound I think."

Latest release info:
"We just dropped a new single called 'Strife' which Rest Assured Records has helped put out (swear to god it’s not an on the nose thing, Ash just called it that…). It’s got one of my favourite riffs that we’ve written on it, literally just spawned out of Al’s brain.

"It was supposed to come out on a comp later this year, but we wanted to drop something before this run of shows we’ve got coming up. We’ll have something new for that comp when it rolls round."

Future plans:
"We got some really cool shows happening soon which is always fun, we’re recording again over spring time in between Jimmy and Al playing with their other bands (Cruelty, Malignant Methods) and then we’re doing a run of shows with Times of Desperation in the summer, which will be sick."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"In terms of bands from Birmingham; Real Domain, Dominate, Nerve Agent, Ordeal. In terms of UK and Ireland; Goon, Cease, Test of Patience, No Relief, Dynamite, Cannonball, Fate, Life of One, Splitknuckle (the best band in the UK bar absolutely none), Coexist… anything to do with Warpath Records… I could stand here all day, just listen to UK Hardcore."
