New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Scorpion

Band: Scorpion
From: Baltimore, Maryland

Their formation story:
(Anusha Salimi, vocals): "Ryan (guitar) and I met through mutual friends and he kept joking around about me singing for his hardcore band because their singer was moving to Florida. I knew I could sing, but the thought of doing it in front of a crowd was terrifying. As a lifelong hardcore and metal fan, I also knew that if I ever decided to record music, I wanted it to be something I had written myself.

"A few weeks later, we met up to work on a song I had started writing. That became our first single, 'Control.' After that, we just kind of fell into working on more music and Ryan brought in some other musicians to form what is now Scorpion."

Their sound in their own words:
"To be honest, we are still playing around with what our sound/style will be. It will likely be mostly metallic hardcore, but I guess time will tell. Influences range from bands like Blacklisted, Merauder, All Out War, and more. It's fair to say I'm a sucker for a crossover band."

Latest release info:
"Our latest single is actually the band favorite. It's called 'Last of a Dying Breed' and is our heaviest song yet. It's a nod to the loyal friends and family that continue to support you no matter what. It is dedicated to my friends in Darkest Hour. Not only are they insanely talented musicians, they also happen to be wonderful people.

"I am turning 40 in a few weeks and I think it's safe to say that's a quality that's harder and harder to come by these days. I wrote those lyrics as a way to pay tribute to those that have showed up for me, while simultaneously extending a big 'fuck you' to those I have stood by that haven't returned the love and support."

Future plans:
"We are wrapping up recording on another heavy one that will complete our debut EP! Our next show is on 11/3 in McLean, Virginia. But we would also like to put together a short East Coast run in the near future. We are open to playing any city (US or Overseas) but I am still learning the booking process."

Wat other bands from their region should we check out?
"We all currently live in Baltimore, and even just between DC and Philly, there are an incredible amount of great bands. A couple of the Blacklisted guys have a new project called Staticlone out of Philly that's started playing shows. And I recently saw a band in Baltimore called Scrutinize that had an awesome set.

"I was born and raised in DC proper, so that deserves its own band recognition. Hardcore wise, definitely give Backlash a listen. On the metal side, Both Genocide Pact and No Mas are simply some of the best around."
