New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Martirio

Photo: Reynaldo Rodriguez

Band: Martirio
From: Fresno, California

Their formation story:
(Ivonne Martinez, vocals): "[Drummer] Andres [Gonzalez] said he was interested in starting a band and asked if I knew anyone that might be down, so I said, 'fuck it, I’m down!'

"Even though I had never been in a band and had no idea how to do vocals, I’ve always wanted to find a way to uplift the Mexican-indigenous community and to specifically put a spotlight on the struggles undocumented people in our community face, so this was the perfect opportunity for us to do that."

Their sound in their own words:
(Ivonne): "I would describe our sound as being right in the middle of hardcore and punk. Some of our influences are Los Crudos, Slant, Punch, and GEL."

Latest release info:
(Nestor Rodriguez, guitars/bass): "I tried to write something that was fast, aggressive but has a groove to it. I was listening to alot of Slant from Korea and they really inspired me."

Future plans:
(Nestor): "We just released a demo so our next goal is to keep writing music, put out an EP ASAP and try to keep playing gigs out of town to get to be in new places."

What are some other bands from your region we should check out?
(Ivonne): "All of the bands from the Lower Central Valley deserve some recognition. Some of our favorites are Bulldog, Burn Unit, Avulsion, Sleight of Hand, Thousand Yard Stare, and Human.

"As well as Steven Thomas for filming all of the shows, LCVDIY, Franko and Maria and Mikie and Jess for putting on most of our local shows and giving us a space to do our thing."
