Band: Man With Rope
From: St. Louis, Missouri
Their formation story:
(Brandon #2, bass): "Our guitar player Nate walked into Course Coffee Roasters which our drummer, Brandon #1, runs and Brandon pointed out Nate’s His Hero Is Gone shirt and then pulled up his sleeve to show his Tragedy birds tattoo. Nate said he had some songs and was looking for a drummer. Brandon said he played drums, but only d-beats, it was a real Step Brothers 'did we just become best friends?!' moment.
"Nathan and Brandon #1 jammed for a bit and then decided to fill out the rest of the lineup. Enter John on second guitar. Nate knew John from going to shows and thought John might be up to play in a Tragedy worship band with In My Eyes' Nothing to Hide melodic guitar parts [laughs]. I knew Nate from playing STL with my old band, NoxThanks. We kept in touch because of record collecting, I didn’t really know many people after moving to STL so I was stoked he asked me to join.
"We had a few practices with another singer that didn’t work out and we ended up hitting up Madeline to see if she was free and at that first practice it just clicked instantly, she 'completed us,' literally."
Their sound in their own words:
"Our influences are pretty simple: Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone, From Ashes Rise, Judgement, and Bastard. We're not re-inventing the wheel [laughs]."
Latest release info:
"We recorded Multiply, Expand, Consume with Ryan Wasoba (of So Many Dynamos fame) and then had it mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air. We’re super proud of it. It seemed like it took forever, playing shows for over a year with zero music up online and having people constantly asking if we had recorded yet, but we hope it was worth the wait."
Future plans:
"We plan to stay busy. We’ve got a few more songs recorded and in our back pocket. We’re looking for the right band to do a split 7” with to release while we work on the next batch of songs for whatever release comes next.
"We’re also planning to do a few out-of-state one-offs over the summer, Chicago, Springfield, Twin Cities, Nashville, Tulsa? We can’t tour because we all have jobs but we still wanna play outside of St. Louis a little, if we can."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"As far as hardcore goes: Kato (they just put out a demo on Roachleg), Mindclot, Blight Future, Direct Measure, Volition, Paternity Test (Nate’s other band) Better Days (John’s other band)... I don't know, too many to list but St. Louis has a lot of genuinely great bands and it feels like things are especially good right now."
