New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Divine Right

Band: Divine Right
From: Charlotte, North Carolina

Their formation story:
(Josh, vocals): "I had always wanted to start a hardcore band ever since I started going to shows in early 2013. Back in Summer 2022, I made a tweet about wanting to start a straight edge band and Kayla (bass) and Carson (drums) replied to it with interest. We started hanging out and became close friends shortly after.

"Originally, we formed a band with a friend of ours that eventually faded away because we just couldn’t make time for it. After that, the three of us just continued to hang out and grow closer as friends. We had befriended Mikey (guitar) from going to shows and later on we threw out the idea of trying to do a straight edge band again. He introduced us to his brother Zach (guitar) at a show and in Spring 2023 we started renting a storage unit and began writing all the songs on the Salvation Ends EP!"

Their sound in their own words:
"When we originally began, we wanted to go in more of the early '00s metalcore route (Prayer For Cleansing, Undying, Arkangel, etc.) but since writing all the songs we just accidentally became more of a combination of metallic hardcore and metalcore and we’re more than okay with that.

"If you’re a fan of Strife, All Out War, Sentence and even Prayer For Cleansing (Carolina legends) you’ll probably like us!"

Latest release info:
"We wrote the songs for the EP from June to sometime in Fall 2023 and then got together with Jordi at Soul Craft Studios in Richmond in November to spend a weekend recording. Over the summer, I brought in a base for lyrics and Zach helped me hash them out into more cohesive pieces to fit the melodies.

"The subjects of the lyrics range from not being taken advantage by industries and political figures, not straying from the path of being straight edge, substance abuse of people close to you and the toll that can have, religious organizations abusing people when they’re at their weakest points, and dealing with grief and loss."

Future plans:
"Right now, we have several shows in the books waiting to be announced. We’re working with a couple labels on releasing the EP on vinyl and cassette. We have plans for a run possibly later in the year. And all in all, just continuing to work on new music and growing as a band!"

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"We’ve been lucky to enough to become friends with so many people in the Carolinas over the years of going to shows so I’ll try to keep the list short. Magnitude, Your Spirit Dies, Fading Signal, A Knife in the Dark, Ends of Sanity, and Eyez Wide Shut are a bunch of homies that are absolutely killing it in the Carolina’s right now!"
