Band: Cold Snap
From: various US states
Their formation story:
(Joe, vocals): "Andrew (guitar) wanted to gather together some friends to cover The Suicide File's 'Cold Snap.' So he reached out to all of us individually for the project. First he contacted me to record vocals having known me for years from college radio and going to shows. Then he got his friend Zach (GEL, Brackish, Silk Sheets) for drums who Andrew met after he booked/signed one of Zach's first bands. Andrew also worked with Sean (guitar) for years in the music industry and got Darren on bass since his talent was on display via social media.
"What's unique about us is that we all live in different parts of the country so we had to learn how to communicate and collaborate while not being in the same room all the time. Most of us have roots in New England or New Jersey. After we recorded the cover song and did a live video of it and realized we enjoyed collaborating, we decided to start writing and recording an EP. We felt it was only right to name the band after the cover song that got us all together in the first place."
Their sound in their own words:
"We’re a high-energy melodic hardcore punk that pulls from all spectrums within that genre. We try to straddle the line of both dissonant and melodic hardcore. We have a lot of mid-tempo parts along with plenty of faster parts. We try to write songs that are straight ahead and in your face, all within a politically and socially conscious framework rooted in anti-fascism and a belief that all people are equal.
"Our first official song was released on a punk compilation in New Zealand which aided Palestinian families. We are very influenced by political punk and hardcore bands who always have something to say about the state of the world and want to prompt reflection and perspective. We feel like that is an important role for all musicians and hope our listeners come out the other side of our music feeling a bit more empowered to make radical change in the world."
Latest release info:
"Tradition of Disregard is our first EP release together as a band. Musically, we wanted to showcase the culmination of the hardcore punk styles we all are influenced by. On Tradition of Disregard, we focused a lot on song structure and tried to make that part of our writing interesting before layering on a lot of riffs. Each of the 4 songs on the EP feels unique in their own way musically.
"Lyrically, I write about the degradation of vulnerable people’s culture, anti-imperialism themes, as well as personal ideas of self-worth and rationalization of existence."
Future plans:
"We are in the very early demo and writing stages for a full length or EP ideally in the next year or so. As show opportunities present themselves, we will take full advantage and present our songs to people who are willing to check them out. We have honestly been humbled by the response we have received from our EP in the short amount of time it has been available. Our hope is to play some international punk or hardcore festivals in the future."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"We kind of consider ourselves a borderless band since our five members live in all corners of the US and our political opinions tend to be more accepted abroad. As much as we wish we had a local scene and community, we are a bit geographically agnostic.
"Our current musical influences follow suit with that and mostly span the globe. We have been listening to a lot of Homesick (Australia), Without Love (UK), Zero Chill (FL), Low Speech (CA), Take Hold (NZ), Contention (FL) Silk Sheets (NJ), Old Ghosts (NY), Brackish (NJ), OK Buddy (PA), Greed Culture (CA), and material material (CA) or really anything coming out of Noisewar which records at Landmine in New Jersey."
