Even though it's a recent cut, you wouldn't be blamed to assume that the song streaming above was actually released in 1980. With its milky-smooth instrumentation and honeyed vocal melodies, "See Me Slumber" recalls a time when American radio was still in love with acts like The Doobie Brothers (the Michael McDonald version) and anything penned by the great Rod Temperton. "See Me Slumber" appears on West End Coast, the recently released debut offering from Young Gun Silver Fox, a duo comprised of multi-instrumentalist producer Shawn Lee and singer-songwriter Andy Platts.
"West Coast pop music of the day was sophisticated, crafted, and, well, pretty darn marvelous," exclaims Lee in a press release for the album, and you know I won't argue with the man. "See Me Slumber" perfectly captures the spirit of the era Lee and Platts are so clearly paying tribute to with Young Gun Silver Fox. The harmonious piano and vocal combo that starts the song off sets the mood, before driving the (funky) soft rock message home with a chorus that could have come off of a Pablo Cruise or Pages album. Trust me, if you love the stuff we covered here and here, Young Gun Silver Fox might be your favorite new band.
West End Coast is available at the Wax Poetics online store.
