The opening cut on their eponymous 1996 swan song album, "Mirrorful" is Jawbox's version of a "School's Out" type of anthem.
Vocalist/guitarist J. Robbins calls out the American school system, accusing it of teaching a revisionist kind of history. "Listened every day 'til 3 / I'm the bitter beneficiary / Illustrate the story / Advertise your dignity" goes the song's acidic second verse. Robbins delivers each line of the song with a sharp clarity, finally exploding during its driving closing verse where he screams "I don't believe" over and over again.
Alice Cooper has nothing on Robbins.
