Nashville’s Materializer might only have two members, but brothers Conner (vocals, guitar) and Chris Poole (drums, vocals) make enough noise for a band twice their size.
The duo released their debut album, As the Body Flies, last week, delivering a heavy dose of doom and stoner metal that balances its crushing moments with stretches of more serene, atmospheric territory.
The Poole brothers are no strangers to playing together. They’ve spent the past eight years in The Swell Fellas, sharing stages with King Buffalo, All Them Witches, YOB, Cave In, and ASG. That history comes through in Materializer, where the stripped-down lineup leaves plenty of room for the brothers to play off each other.
As the Body Flies sounds remarkably confident for a debut, with songs that take their time getting where they’re going and plenty of twists along the way. The sessions was recorded by Dave "Squirrel" Covell and Materializer, mixed by Ben McLeod (All Them Witches), and mastered by Mikey Allred at Dark Art Audio.
I caught up with Conner and Chris on the day the album was released to talk about the advantages and challenges of operating as a two-piece, making As the Body Flies, and where they hope to take Materializer from here.
