Band: Dance
From: Sydney, Australia
Their formation story?
(Jakson, vocals): "I’d already been wanting to do a band for a while at this point two years ago. Arda, one of the guitarists, had been a friend of a friend for a while who I’d see around at local shows or tearing them up with his math rock project Reddshift. Zak, our other guitarist, was introduced to me by a mutual of ours and we quickly bonded over our mutual love of hardcore.
"Zak and our drummer Phil had collaborated on some projects in the past that hadn’t quite taken off. I got all of us into a room some point and it’s been magic since. Tom joined the band on bass later after our first show, the final and best piece of the puzzle."
Their sound in their own words:
"We like to say it’s ‘metalcore,' certainly because we sound like and have been inspired by the ‘metalcore revival’ that’s been going around at the moment, but honestly we took ideas from a lot of disparate sounds as we wrote the demo. Not because we intended to make such a unique or varied sound or anything, but because we honestly had no idea what the band wanted to sound like for the first half-a-year of existing.
"I like to tell people that when we started out we were gonna be a generic graff-logo type of band. We only really honed in on our style of metalcore in the leadup to our first show. I think that’s made clearest when you learn Patriarch was the song we wrote last for the demo. So yeah, I guess metalcore, but not necessarily super metallic.
"Cast You Down was a band I found during the process of writing the demo that I feel like is as close to our sound as you can get. Other bands we’ve drawn inspiration from include skycamefalling, Poison the Well, Converge, and Carpathian."
Latest release info:
"The demo represents our two-year-ish journey of trying to figure out a sound. Our mission statement for the band was to fill some sort of gap in the local and national scene. Australia’s had a lengthy history of proper metalcore, metallic hardcore, which has slowly given way to what is contemporaneously understood as ‘metalcore’, all that djenty sorta stuff.
"We’d like to think that we’re not just joining ‘metalcore revival’ as a global trend, but helping to bring back Australia’s own storied proper hardcore metalcore scene. Shoutout @theburialsound for cooking and being an absolute pleasure to work with."
Future plans:
"We’ve started doing a small run of shows alongside the release of the demo. After that I think we’re gonna cook a couple tracks for a potential split. We’re keen to work with someone overseas on that, so if you’re out there feel free to hit our line. Other than that just keep on keeping on with shows."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"So many to name. BOZO and Hunny keeping Sydney young and fresh. Thantu Thikha from Canberra are our brothers in arms. Skorn and Feel The Pain from Newcastle are taking over. Ends In Tragedy and Blood On My Hands are keeping metalcore alive and well in Melbourne. Nowhere2run and Time Ends holding down Adelaide. Hysteria helping Perth’s DIY scene.
"SCRAM from Yamba are the freshest youngest cunts ever. Every band from Brisbane has no right to be as good as they are. And obviously Speed for being the rising tide that’s lifted all boats and waved the banner for Sydney all around the world. Seven Hells."
