Song of the Day

Glass Moon, “The Telegram Song,” from Growing in the Dark (Radio Records, 1982)

Coming out of the same early '80s scene in North Carolina that also birthed the dB's, Arrogance and the Spongetones, Glass Moon never truly got past "regional heroes" status. Worldwide chart dominance might have eluded them, but it wasn't because they didn't have a discography packed with top-notch tunes.

Appearing on Growing in the Dark, Glass Moon's sophomore album, "The Telegram Song" features the kind of honeyed melodic hooks that are so potent, you find yourself humming along after the first chorus pass.

Dave Adams' dulcet vocals counter his melancholic piano melodies beautifully. Combine that with the track's muscular bridge section, and you are left with a song that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a 10cc or Electric Light Orchestra album. Such a stunning ballad, it's a mystery how "The Telegram Song" didn't become a Top 10 single.
