I recently stumbled across Coffincraft during one of my usual music wormholes on YouTube, and I'm glad I did. Formed in 2008, the Finnish death metal outfit have two EPs and one album to their name. "Impious Spawn" is the opening cut off of Coffincraft's 2015 debut album, In Eerie Slumber, and it's the perfect introduction to the band.
After a brief movie sample, the song explodes with a double-guitar lead onslaught that then gives way to Niklas Heiskanen's vicious vocals. While the recording retains the elements one expects from a Scandinavian death metal record (chainsaw-like guitar tone, raw vocal production), every instrument sits nicely in the mix.

Fans of such bands as Dismember, Fleshcrawl, and Desultory will not be let down by "Impious Spawn," or for that matter, the rest of In Eerie Slumber. The songwriting here finds a group that has obviously studied the greats, but Coffincraft inject enough of their own personality into their arrangements to help them carve out their own piece of real estate in their genre.
In Eerie Slumber is available on Coffincraft's Bandcamp page.
