Few bands have managed to stay as consistently relevant across multiple generations of hardcore as Madball. More than three decades into their run, the NYHC institution continues to bridge the gap between classic hardcore and modern heaviness.
The band have just announced the forthcoming release of Not Your Kingdom, their 10th studio LP, on July 24 through Nuclear Blast. According to the band, the record digs deeper lyrically than previous releases, with frontman Freddy Cricien delivering some of his most personal material to date while reflecting on the state of the world and the human condition.
The first taste of the album arrives with “Rebel Kids,” a groove-heavy anthem accompanied by a music video co-directed by Madball vocalist Freddy Cricien and Dave Causa, who also handled filming and editing:
“Funny enough, ‘Rebel Kids’ was the first track written for this album and actually was completely put together probably two years ago,” Cricien explained. “The sentiment, vibe and message of the song really became the catalyst for what came after.”
While the band considered multiple songs as potential lead singles, Cricien says “Rebel Kids” ultimately felt like the right introduction to the album. “We all loved the song immediately, but I couldn’t have known it would be the first single,” he said. “In the end, ‘Rebel Kids’ made the most sense musically, lyrically, etc. We look forward to releasing this song and album. It’s a special one for us and we’re hoping the rest of the world feels the same once they hear it.”
Not Your Kingdom was tracked at The Boneyard Studios in Nashville, TN, with additional interludes recorded by Jeff "Stress" Davis and Chuck Treece at Chop Shop Studios. The album was produced and engineered by the team of Andrew Baylis, Aiden Thompson, and Grady Saxman, with final mixing and mastering handled by Lee Rouse.
