Band: Words of Scáthach
From: Portland, Oregon
Their formation story:
(Kieran, vocals): "Technically speaking, Words of Scáthach started as a side project. Josh (guitar) and I were writing for other projects separately while sharing a practice space when one night Josh proposed getting together to write a metalcore demo for fun.
"Originally we planned to release the songs we wrote and simultaneously recorded in that rough state, just as a two piece project, but after sharing them with friends in the scene, we were asked to open for a local show and recruited MJ (drums), Erin (bass), and Anton (guitar) to complete the lineup.
"As we continued to practice and play shows we decided to commit more fully to the project, leading to where we are now as a fully realized band."
Their sound in their own words:
"We all listen to a lot of '90s-'10s metalcore, and I think that’s pretty apparent in our sound. Some of our major influences are Undying, Heartscarved, Prayer for Cleansing, Walls of Jericho, and Apathemy. Most of us also love thrash and heavy metal so we try to sprinkle some of that in too. Josh is pulling a lot of influence from The Black Dahlia Murder and Anton cited Avenged Sevenfold."
Latest release info:
"The songs we released on the split with Price of Forgiveness were the first two that Josh and I wrote together. We had originally planned to record newer material for it but ended up re-recording our first two because the other ones weren’t were going to be fully fleshed out in time.
"We recorded the songs live at the Hallowed Halls here in Portland with Joe Anderson, as did PoF. Joe also mixed and mastered all the songs on the split, and really nailed the '90s nostalgic sound we were going for. We will have the split available soon on tape in collaboration with a label we’re super excited to be working with."
Future plans:
"At the time of writing this, we’re playing Northwest Hardcore Fest in Portland in a few days which we’ve been looking forward to for months, and at the end of August were playing another show with our friends in Recidivist for the Portland date of their tour. After that we’re playing a show with Price of Forgiveness to celebrate the release of the physical tapes in late September.
"Other than that, we have the short run with Sacrament and some recording planned for Fall / Winter for an EP and another split. Anton and Josh have been cooking up some truly insane songs for those releases that we can’t wait to share."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"The Pacific Northwest is home to some amazing bands, many of which we’re lucky enough to call our friends. We can’t include them all but some stand outs are Price of Forgiveness, Tolls, Misery Whip, SLIME, Sacrament, Gun Shy, Paperclip, Reflex, SPURR, Tranq, and The Blood of Saint Angeles
"Also, most of us have other projects such as xfortunex, xcaliberx, Armored Coffin, Simian, and Defiant Body are a few."
