Band: Owe You Nothing
From: Raleigh, North Carolina
Their formation story:
(Dean McNeil, vocals): "I was working a shit job doing traffic control at the time, shortly prior had parted ways with my old band, Fading Signal, and was just beginning to give up on doing music at all. One day, I was out on a job site, and the idea just came to me with a few riffs. I just remember thinking that it was a band I had already listened to, and I was wrong. But I had to make it real, so I hit up our drummer Sean and our first guitarist Tristyn, we snagged Jordy and David from Fading Signal for bass and second guitar.
"After that, the first draft of Owe You Nothing was born. Tristyn had a son, and Jordy is focusing on Fading Signal, so we picked up our friends Trey (Eyez Wide Shut) and Ethan (80 Bagg). So far, it's going strong!"
Their sound in their own words:
"New York worship. We all love just about all the music that’s come out of New York in the last 3 decades, whether it’s hip-hop, punk, hardcore, death metal, or black metal. You name it. We have a lot of transplants down here in North Carolina, and with that comes a lot of exposure to culture and music.
"When I met our drummer Sean, who’s from Long Island originally, he literally gave me a big stack of old CDs, and we’d just talk music and graffiti. 3-5 bands/artists I’d say influence us the most for the sound would be Madball, Neglect, Mobb Deep, Biohazard, and Sick of It All."
Latest release info:
"These are our first songs we wrote with just the 3 core members of David, Sean and I. We put a lot of stress into making sure it was something we felt comfortable putting out because our first demo felt a little rushed cuz we were excited and wanted to play shows. The songs explore themes of failure in friendship and brotherhood in 'Scorched Earth,' and 'Slaughterhouse Blues' is a callout to the corrupt institution of police, which has reared its ugly head in our state over the years.
"Then you know we had to put a cover on there. 'Street Fight' by Breakdown, classic. If you don’t know, now you know. Shout out to Jacob Beeson for recording, mixing, and mastering the whole deal!"
Future plans:
"Lots of shows! So far, January is packed with shows across the Carolinas. In February, we will be going back to Jacob Beason to record some new music for later in the year. Some small tours in the works as well. The future's looking bright."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Level Six, 80 Bagg, One Of Nine, Eyez Wide Shut, Skin You Alive, Brass Tongue, Fading Signal, Circle Five, Survival Tactics, Twisted Fate, Get Wise, Guard Dog, True Purpose, Jaw, Lucky Feeling, Natural End, Demonize, Paper Trail, Dead & Dreaming, Chaos Must Bow, Selfish Means, Almost Heaven."
