Band: Nunya
From: Lancaster, California
Their formation story:
(Cole Scott, vocals): "Nunya came together pretty randomly. Jimmy and I have been playing in local Antelope Valley bands for most of our lives. For years I been writing and recording GarageBand demos at home, and over time I’ve built up a hard drive full of song ideas—some of which I knew wouldn’t get used in my other bands for one reason or another.
"A while back, I started adding vocals to a few of them kind of treating it like a personal diary. I didn’t show anyone for a long time, but one day I played a few of the tracks for the homies, and they encouraged me to pursue it. That gave me the push to go jam with Jimmy and polish the ideas, but I wanted to make the band purely for fun, self expression and playing with our friends which is kind of a core ethos for us to not be too serious or at least be serious where it counts with writing the music and eventually that turned into recording the demo with Brad."
Their sound in their own words:
(Jimmy Wheeler, drums/vocals): "One big influence on our writing is Blacklisted, Trapped Under Ice, Soul Search, kinda just 2010s hardcore in general. We love Negative Approach as well. Fast and pissed off is our bread and butter. The homies in Step by Step from Tehachapi influenced a lot of my personal approach on drums especially when we hit the Youth Crew kinda breakdowns. I just love playing that sort of two step.
"To be honest, lately, I’ve been more influenced by my friends more than anything, shouts out the boys in All Eyez and ‘92."
Latest release info:
(Cole): "The demo is a collection of songs written during different low points and turbulent times in my life over the past five years. A lot of the lyrics are really personal and while tough to it also felt cathartic to speak on.
"We recorded it with our friend Brad at Local Man Records out in Hesperia. Jimmy’s good friend and tattoo artist Nico from Yuma did the cover art. The layout was done by our new friend Kai, who we met through playing shows in the Coachella Valley with Shiiva very talented and hard working person.
"The logo was done by the homie Mully, who I met while touring with my first band been a huge fan of his artwork for years so that was sick. Criminalized will be putting out tapes soon, which is a huge honor. Shout out to Aldo for making that happen."
Future plans:
(Jimmy): "We have been writing new songs, working on some riffs. Both of us personally have been just trying to hustle and make things happen. I would say our plan is to get more merch and music out, encourage more of our friends out of town and out of state to make our scene a stop for their tours. We’ve all been going pretty hard with our group of friends just trying to make things happen in the Antelope Valley. Shout out everyone in AVHC. "
What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Cole): "Shout out to the Antelope Valley homies Triste, Mndst, Air-Gap, Theory, and Los Mangos. Also, shout out to Hatespeech, Bathala, Killfloor, Outmind, Fatal Wounds, and Face Facts."
(Jimmy): "Lazy Beam, Overbite, All Eyez, ‘92, Dismas & Just Go, Just Leave. Also, shout out to my cat, Misty."
