New Hardcore Band Spotlight: JEWELTONE

Band: JEWELTONE
From: Buffalo, New York

Their formation story:
(Christian, guitar/bass): "Over a year ago, I started playing more guitar and I started putting together rough demos. I sort of took a break from writing emo, pop punk stuff to challenge myself with something more aggressive.

"I bumped in to Jordan (drums) at a show and asked him if he wanted to play sometime, sent him some rough demos and he was down. Shortly after that I met Nef (vocals) at a show and we’ve been ripping ever since."

Their sound in their own words:
(Jordan, drums): "Christian and I linked in the mid 2010s for a heavier hardcore punk project (Burn Book), so we had that part kinda locked in when we crossed paths again for Jeweltone. When Neff came into the fold, It presented a new way of looking at the material, and I think Christian and I wanted to preserve the things that make Neff unique in this (hardcore) lane, as much as possible.

"We all have different influences but I think creating something that represents us as a group, takes precedent over trying to emulate influences or going for a 'certain sound.' Whatever people want to call the art, is chill with us, we’re just living in it."

Latest release info:
Nef (vocals): "Releasing this project has been a great experience for me coming from Buffalo’s hip-hop scene. I was able to record my vocals with the personality and presence I’ve developed as an emcee, while expanding my range and tapping into a more aggressive energy that I’d normally be limited from as a rapper. \

"We’re very proud of this release and it’s just the tip of the iceberg with what we hope to do as a hardcore band. I’m looking forward to creating more music and seeing how we can push the boundaries even further with the different skill sets and backgrounds that we each bring."

Future plans:
(Christian): "We’re playing our first show May 26th with Move, Enervate, Wisdom & War, and our buds, Final Declaration. Aside from gigging, we’ll be recording more material and you’ll be seeing more releases soon.

(Jordan): "For me personally, I’d also like to use this project to encourage legitimate unity and inclusivity across scenes in the city for old heads who are too jaded and newer blood coming in and checking out what it’s all about, I think just the fact that we exist as a unit is dummy important and it shouldn’t be lost on us that we’re doing something not many other people in the city are willing or able to do"

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Shoutout Final Declaration, Spaced, Smash n Grab, Dishonored, Bungler, Exhibition, Speakerfire, Bad Blood, Auto Ignition, Thomas Harvey, Fatal Visions, Hotel Etiquette, Gatto Black, Del Paxton, Science Man, and I Can See Mountains."
