Lesser Beings is a new band from Glasgow, UK that play the kind of aggressive music that would suit a wide array of live bills. "Everyone in the band is into quite a wide variety of music and I think that all comes into play with Lesser Beings," vocalist Lev emailed No Echo. "It feels like bands (and music fans) can be very hyper fixated on fitting right into a specific niche genre right now, but we're not really doing that.
"We're just all pulling ideas from all over the place to the table and making whatever heavy, aggressive, miserable music comes out. I personally have a lot of different, mostly '80s and '90s, hardcore punk and metal in mind when writing different parts for Lesser Beings... From Cro-Mags and Crucifix to Obituary and Grave... Crowbar, Merauder, Grief, Life of Agony, Sepultura, Godflesh, Dystopia, Nailbomb... All sorts of stuff."
Lesser Beings just released their debut EP, a self-titled 5-tracker:
"Derek already has a couple of new songs written, in fact they were written before we even started recording the EP, so now that the EP is out we'll soon reconvene in the studio to start working on the next release pretty quickly, I think," wrote Lev. "I believe we're playing with the Crew Cuts Records hardcore band Skrewball at the start of October, and we're also looking to book some shows around the schedules of our other bands in any place that will have us as well!"
In our email exchange, No Echo asked Lev for some thoughts on the current Scottish music scene. "Scotland is actually a real hotbed of heavy music right now and we're all really proud of our local scenes and very active in them. Fraser and Derek both play in the old-school death metal band Coffin Mulch, who are fucking fantastic and doing very well right now; everyone should check them out.
"I am also doing vocals in two other bands just now; a new metallic hardcore band named No Known Weakness, and a crossover band called Hard Stare. Fraser is in about six thousand other bands besides Lesser Beings and the aforementioned Coffin Mulch, the most active of which I think is a sort of sludgey punk number called Backstabber.
"Besides all that self-promotion, I'll avoid giving a big list of other specific band names as I could write you a whole separate article on the various Scottish scenes right now, plus I'll inevitably forget someone and feel bad. But it's definitely worth noting that we have all sorts of shit popping off here right now.
"I think everyone reading this probably already knows about the metallic hardcore scene thanks to Northern Unrest, and a quick Google of 'Scottish death metal' will turn up a Louder article from last year detailing some good starting points for that stuff. There's also all sorts of grind, thrash, punk, power violence, you fucking name it. And most of it rules. Lesser Beings is actually kind of a reflection of that, really... We've got a bit of everything you like (and, probably also even more so, everything you don't like)!"
