New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Giallo

Photo: Andy Wilcox

Band: Giallo
From: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Their sound in their own words:
(Vocalist Jake VanKempen) "I hate answering these kinds of questions, I feel like most people's answers are so catered towards creating a 'cool' image for themselves that they become disingenuous.

"If I had to describe our sound I would say fast and mean. Musically, I think we would agree on Void and Deep Wound. I write lyrics about my favorite giallo films and killing people."

Latest release info:
"The main inspiration for this project was to scratch an itch for a style that people around here weren't playing. Historically, Minneapolis' hardcore scene has been known for its crust (Misery) and metalcore bands (Harvest, Disembodied).

"Granted those were back in the '90s, but those styles are still very prevalent with bands here today."

Future plans:
"We are doing a Midwest tour in January. We are also pressing the demo on a 7-inch through Damien Records and Baby Chico Records, more on that in the future. Other than that we have been writing for the next release."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"My personal favorites are Prize Horse and Wanderer from here, and Phobophilic from Fargo, North Dakota. Noah also plays in a hardcore band called All of God's Children and I also play in a power violence band called Twin Tombs."
