False Negative is a band playing fast, loud, no-frills hardcore rooted in the early ’80s, with just enough Oi! swing and left turns to keep things interesting. Formed in 2019, the Illinois group came out of what vocalist Sean Holland calls “mass psychosis and boredom,” with members revisiting a similar project they had started a decade earlier, but this time with a clear goal. “Actually record music and play shows,” he tells No Echo. That focus has paid off, with the band now operating as a tight unit and even expanding toward a five-piece lineup.
False Negative’s sound pulls heavily from staples like Negative Approach, Negative FX, SOA, and The Abused, while also dipping into European Oi! and bands like The Templars and Nabat. At the same time, the band is not afraid to stretch beyond strict genre lines. “We play what we feel like playing at any given time,” Sean explains, noting that newer material brings in subtle touches from bands like The Jam and Radiators From Space.
That approach is fully realized on their upcoming 12-inch, All Over But the Shouting, set for release via Noise Grade Standard and Plebeian Records. Across its 15 tracks, False Negative delivers what Sean describes as Midwest hardcore punk and Oi!
Lyrically, the record reflects both personal and regional tension. Sean points to themes of paranoia and the feeling of life slowly falling apart, ideas that feel especially relevant given the current state of things. There is also a strong sense of place, with references to what he calls the “cornfield warzones of Illinois,” grounding the record in the band’s surroundings.
False Negative are also part of a healthy Central Illinois scene that continues to grow. Bands like No Guard and Prevention are helping put the region on the map, while local acts such as Outsider, The Shit People, Angelust, and Scorn keep things active on the ground. With Chicago close by, there is a steady flow of shows and collaboration, and bands like Fuerza Bruta, Lost Legion, and Flatfoot 56 help connect the broader Illinois hardcore community.
Outside the band, Sean stays active through his zine Stinkbug, a cut-and-paste publication that has featured interviews with Jesse Michaels, Hoxton Tom of 4Skins, and filmmaker Macon Blair, among others. DIY, baby.
