Song of the Day

The Spongetones, “She Goes Out With Everybody,” from Beat Music (Ripete Records, 1982)

Listening to the Spongetones' "She Goes Out With Everybody," it wouldn't be out of line to assume that it was written and recorded sometime in the early '60s. Featuring ringing guitar chords, tight vocal harmonies, and a sparkling middle eight, the song sounds like a long-lost, pre-Sgt. Pepper's era, Beatles single.

But the Spongetones don't hail from Liverpool. As a matter of fact, the group doesn't even come from England. The Spongetones call Charlotte, N.C. home, and "She Goes Out With Everybody" came out during the height of new wave in the early '80s, and during the beat group movement that invaded America during the first half of the '60s.

I wish I could call the band a one-hit-wonder, but like the rest of their singles, "She Goes Out With Everybody" never found the kind of commercial success it deserved. In some parallel universe right now, a classic rock station is cranking this tune out.
