Hoops hails from the same hometown as John Mellencamp, but their sound is far removed from the "Jack and Diane" singer-songwriter's rootsy rock 'n' roll. The Bloomington, Indiana quartet's sound is an enchanting blend of dreampop and jangly indie pop. Some music blogs have labeled Hoops a shoegaze band, but on their brand new five-song EP, the guitar pedal selection leans more on Sarah Records than the Creation Records side of things.
"Gemini" is a hooky tune driven by melodic guitar lines and Drew Auscherman's falsetto vocals. Instrumentally, "Gemini" recalls The Ocean Blue's pristine indie pop, while its production is decidedly lo-fi. I came across "Gemini" on someone's Spotify playlist last week, and I've had Hoops on repeat ever since.
EP is available on vinyl, CD, and mp3 directly from Fat Possum Records.
